Who We Are

The Zimbabwe Sex Workers Alliance (ZIMSWA) was formed in 2015 to respond to the lack of a unified national voice representing sex workers in Zimbabwe. Before then, scattered groups and collectives mostly working with female sex workers existed, but male and transgender sex workers were largely excluded. Recognising this gap, key population groups came together in 2014 to lay the foundation for what would become ZIMSWA. In August 2017, the organisation was officially registered as a Trust, cementing its status as a national alliance.

Since then, ZIMSWA has grown into a vibrant movement advancing the sexual, legal, and human rights of sex workers in their diversity. The organisation now has a membership of 26 groups, collectives, and organisations across all ten provinces of Zimbabwe, coordinated through provincial representatives. These structures form the backbone of ZIMSWA’s mission: to create a society where sex workers are free from violence, discrimination, and exclusion, and can fully enjoy their fundamental rights.
